UEFA Fitness for Football gathering

One thing that became clear in the consultation process was the gap between national associations as regards the meaning of fitness and that there was a considerable number of fitness experts without knowledge specific to football. UEFA’s wish is to create a clear, football-specific message, and also to stimulate the associations on how they can integrate fitness topics within their coach education programme. A major discussion point is that alongside the development of skills and teamwork, players must be fit enough to maintain their skills and teamwork in regular matches over an entire season. This requires football-specific fitness training that is part of the players’ overall training process.

High blood pressure risk rising among U.S. youths

youths iStockphoto American children may be in the midst of a blood pressure problem. A new study from the American Heart Association shows that over the past 13 years, children and adolescents have seen stark rises in their risk for high blood pressure. That could set them up for a lifetime of stroke, heart disease and kidney failure. “High blood pressure is dangerous in part because many people don’t know they have it,” study author Dr. Bernard Rosner, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass., said in a statement .

Correction: Blood Pressure Story

Finance Sat, Aug 24, 2013, 4:46 PM EDT – U.S. Markets closed Can Debt Raise Your Blood Pressure? By Brandon Ballenger | Money Talks News Tue, Aug 20, 2013 7:39 PM EDT Print High debt can mean high blood pressure, a new study from Northwestern University says at least for young adults. Researchers used data on 8,400 young adults, ages 24-32, to examine associations between debt and health. Heres what it found: 20 percent of participants said they would still be in debt even if they liquidated all assets. A high debt-to-asset ratio was associated with high perceived stress (12 percent higher than average), depression (13 percent higher) and worse self-reported general health. Those with high debt had a 1.3 percent increase in diastolic blood pressure compared with the average which is a bigger deal than it might sound.

Can Debt Raise Your Blood Pressure?

That increased to a remarkable 80 percent, well above the national average, the researchers said. The research involved Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, a network of 21 hospitals and 73 doctors’ offices, which makes coordinating treatment easier than in independent physicians’ offices. The number of heart attacks and strokes among Northern California members fell substantially during roughly the same time as the 2001-09 study. Dr. Marc Jaffe, the lead author and leader of a Kaiser heart disease risk reduction program, said it’s impossible to know if the blood pressure program can be credited for those declines, but he thinks it at least contributed. Reductions continued even after the study ended; in 2011, 87 percent of roughly 350,000 Kaiser patients had recommended blood pressure levels. The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Gut Taste Mechanism Defective in Type 2 Diabetes Patients

Depression with diabetes may speed mental decline

In 2007, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. To proceed with the finding, the researchers compared healthy adults with type 2 diabetes patients. On glucose exposure, they noticed that in healthy adults, the control of sweet taste receptors in the intestine enabled their bodies to regulate the glucose intake in 30 minutes after exposure whereas abnormalities in diabetic adults led to rapid absorption of glucose. On detecting the glucose in the intestine, the sweet taste receptors trigger a response that regulates the manner in which glucose is taken by the intestine. The researchers noticed that compared to healthy adults, the diabetes victims absorbed more glucose rapidly and in large quantities. The study highlights that diabetes is not a disorder that is limited to pancreas and insulin, the gut too plays an effective role.

More than one-quarter of Americans older than age 65 have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An estimated 6.5 million Americans in this age group suffer from depression, according to the National Alliance for Mental Illness. To assess the role of depression in cognitive decline among older diabetes patients, Sullivan’s team looked at data on nearly 3,000 people over age 55 with type 2 diabetes and risk factors for cardiovascular events. On average, participants had had diabetes for about 9 years. Tests of cognitive abilities were given to all participants at the study’s beginning, and again at 20 months and 40 months. One test measured psychomotor speed, or how long it takes the brain to register a stimulus, process it and respond.

British warship docks in Gibraltar amid Spain row

In 2007, a headquarters element from the New York National Guards 42nd Infantry Division controlled a fictitious force of more than 110,000 troops on a computer-generated battlefield, according to the Army. The close relationship between the Pentagon and Egypts military has made Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel a key point of contact between Washington and Cairo; defense officials have described regular phone conversations between Hagel and Egypts defense minister, Gen. Abdel Fatah al-Sissi. Hagel said in a statement that hed called al-Sisi again on Thursday to reiterate that the United States remains ready to work with all parties to help achieve a peaceful, inclusive way forward. The Department of Defense will continue to maintain a military relationship with Egypt, but I made it clear that the violence and inadequate steps toward reconciliation are putting important elements of our longstanding defense cooperation at risk. Still, although the White House has said it would delay the delivery of four Lockheed Martin-built F-16 fighters to Cairo as part of the U.S. military assistance for Egypt, Obama did not say he would cut off Cairos aid, worth about $1.5 billion per year.

Spain has since imposed intense customs checks at the border to Gibraltar, leading to daily hours-long queues of cars. Prime Minister David Cameron described the border checks as “politically motivated” and has pressed the European Union to send observers to the border as soon as possible. It is the latest in a string of diplomatic rows over the self-governing British overseas territory, which measures just 6.8 square kilometres (2.6 square miles) and is home to about 30,000 people. Both Britain and Spain say the naval visits are unrelated to their differences over Gibraltar. With Madrid’s prior agreement, British helicopter and commando carrier HMS Illustrious on Sunday stopped at a Spanish naval base in Rota in southern Spain for a technical stop of several hours before leading naval exercises in the Mediterranean. The HMS Westminster, which was accompanied by two smaller support vessels also docking in Gibraltar, is also taking part in the naval exercise, codenamed Cougar ’13, which was planned long before the latest row broke out.

But the same relationship was not seen for normal-weight women. “Physical activity seems to be more strongly associated with lower risk of endometrial cancer in overweight or obese women,” Dr. Alpa Patel, an epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, told Reuters Health. “We know that one of the strongest risk factors for endometrial cancer is obesity, so when we think of the ability to mitigate any of the excess risk through physical activity, I think that’s a very positive message,” said Patel, who studies exercise and cancer prevention but did not take part in the new study. There are two mechanisms through which exercise might reduce endometrial cancer risk, Patel added – by helping women lose weight and by directly reducing circulating estrogen levels. “Even in the absence of weight loss, here we’re seeing that there’s a positive value of being physically active to your risk of endometrial cancer,” she said.
